The Gilded Rose by Joanna Shupe

Ditching the Goalbook, Chasing the Chaos

I’ve learned a major lesson about my reading life this year: the absolute best way to read is to completely ditch the goals and just follow whatever shiny, intriguing book crosses your path—even if it violently shoves you out of your comfort zone.

Enter The Gilded Rose by Joanna Shupe.

Now, you might be asking: Why on earth is historical fiction out of your comfort zone? Well, I self-admittedly struggle hard with the historical genre. But this one promised a delicious blend of history and steam, so I took the plunge. Let me tell you, I nearly didn’t survive the first 15%. I legitimately wanted to DNF because Orson Grey is insufferable, and I hated him right out of the gate.

I am so, so glad I kept going.

Enter the Beast in the Shadows

The story follows Caroline as she desperately searches for any way out of a nightmare marriage. Her only real hope? Finding out Orson has a mistress and catching him in the act. Instead, she stumbles right into an enemy of Grey’s: Zane Bishop.

Zane is a man forced into reclusiveness due to a past accident that left him disfigured. There are so many complex, heartbreaking layers to him that I can’t even unpack them all here, but he is officially our gruff-yet-gentle beast hiding in the shadows. Thanks to a clever setup by his sister, Caroline finds refuge organizing Zane’s library. What starts as an alliance slowly transforms into a fierce obsession, a tender romance, and a partnership with a man who will stop at nothing to destroy Orson Grey—first for sins of the past, and ultimately for the cruelty Grey is currently inflicting on Caroline.

Beauty and the Beast vibes, but make it historical, gritty, and oh-so-steamy? Yes, please.

The Reality Check & The Verdict

Shupe doesn’t pull any punches here. This is a tragic tale fraught with real pain, serving as a stark, uncompromising reminder of the brutal unfairness of historical law for women. I completely respect what the author was doing—shining a glaring spotlight on historical reality. That said, strictly following those historical limitations did make the story suffer a tiny bit for me, as there were arguably more satisfying paths the ending could have taken. But I also deeply respect an author who sticks to her guns.

Let’s just say this one completely wrecked my sleep schedule—I finally put the Kindle down at 2:00 AM.

The Verdict: Overall, this gave me all the moody, gothic-adjacent romance feels. It lands right in that addictive, stay-up-till-2am sweet spot for me—imperfections and all! Definitely check your content warnings/triggers before diving in, but I can already hand-deliver this recommendation to my romance-only book group and watch them devour it.
