Welcome to my radar, H.M. Wolfe! ⚡️ I flew through this in two days flat and officially need book two yesterday.
🗣️ A note on content warnings: I really appreciated the concise trigger warnings up front. Sometimes when warning lists span pages, it deters me from even trying a book, so this balance was perfect. That said, even though this was a solid 5-star read for me, definitely check the warnings and decide for yourself and your sanity if it’s right for you!
WHAT I LOVED:
• The High-Stakes Tension: What truly had me in a chokehold was the sheer tension between all the characters—the interpersonal friction was top-tier and drove the story forward.
• The World & Multi-POVs: A dark, corrupted dystopian setting that expertly blends current reality with a plausible future. Shifting perspectives added so much depth to how events were perceived (even if I was left craving a tiny bit more deep backstory on how society originally fell apart!).
• The Pacing & Atmosphere: Perfectly balanced and packed with action-packed twists that left me reeling and utterly speechless.
• The Emotional Depth: The immersive writing put me right in the trenches with them—I went through the wringer with happiness, grief, anger, and disgust. Wolfe handles heavy themes like power, sexual assault, family trauma, politics, and prejudice in a deeply meaningful and reflective way.
THE ENDING: 💔 Shattered me in the best way possible. Shocking, devastating, and heartbreaking.
To those who say this isn’t great, reading taste is always subjective, and this hit every single sweet spot for me. Now, I’m dying to hear what the audiobook sounds like! 🎧✨
