Series Complete: The Good, The Dark, and The Unnecessary
This series is now complete. My bestie and I devoured all four books now.
We even listened to The Housemaid’s Wedding, which, in my opinion, was unnecessary. I won’t be reviewing it because there’s no point in writing “no thanks, not for me”—although my friends who read my reviews might find that really funny!
This last installment is the weakest of the main trilogy in my humble opinion (3.5 stars).
Three-quarters of the way through, I was blown away by a twist I genuinely didn’t see coming, but it made total sense in hindsight. That said, I didn’t fly through it as quickly as I expected to—definitely not compared to the first book. I also figured out one of the later twists, which turned out to be quite sickening and dark. To top it off, the epilogue felt a little shoehorned in just so the story could wrap up with that specific line.
Synopsis & Thoughts
Millie is trying to move on from her dark past and settle into suburban family life, but she can’t help feeling suspicious of those around her. She instantly takes a dislike to her new neighbor, Suzette—she’s overly flirty and not the type of person Millie wants around her husband. On top of that, Millie is desperate to keep her neighbors from discovering her history, even after hiring a housemaid to help around the house. Unable to fully trust anyone, she remains constantly on edge. But while her eyes are on everyone else, could the darkness she’s trying to escape be closer to home than she thinks?
I will say the darker elements of this book made me rate it lower. Plots where kids are put in danger (trying not to spoil anything!) always make for a much harder read.
Also, can we talk about how Rebecca is practically haunting us now? Ever since we finished reading it, it keeps popping up in random references across everything else we read!
Overall, it was still a fun journey with the series. Looking forward to seeing what series me and the bestie pick next!
