I must have a deal with the book gods this year, because every cover-buy I’ve picked up has been an absolute winner. This one is a fast-paced, magnetic read that kept me completely hooked from the first chapter.
There is so much packed into this story that I refuse to spoil a single detail, but here is the setup: Lacey and Brian are hitting a rough patch in their marriage and decide to take a trip to their friends’ lake house to reset. Leaving their three kids in the capable hands of Lacey’s mom, Nicole, Brian heads up early while Lacey carpools with their friend’s husband, Zach.
Then everything shatters.
Early the next morning, Nicole receives the call every parent dreads. Lacey and Zach never made it to the lake house. They were found stranded on a rural road—Zach dead, and Lacey covered in blood with a severe head injury. At the hospital, the nightmare deepens: the blood isn’t Lacey’s, and she is practically catatonic. She cannot—or will not—speak, offering nothing but a hollow, vacant stare.
When the evidence points strictly to her, Lacey becomes the prime suspect in Zach’s murder and is taken into custody. As she sits mute in a jail cell, her family, lawyer, and the police scramble to piece together the truth. With local politics pressing for a quick conviction, Nicole is left terrified that her daughter may spend the rest of her life behind bars without ever speaking another word.
The author crafts a multi-layered, deeply heartbreaking narrative that goes far beyond your typical silent-suspect thriller. While there is a sizeable cast of characters—something that usually bogs down a mystery for me—every single person feels necessary, interesting, and crucial to the story’s payoff. The pacing never lags, the emotional depth hits hard, and that ending? Absolutely fantastic.
I’m so impressed with her storytelling here that I would love to try a series by this author next, just to see if her ability to sustain character development and tension across a continuing story is just as on point! A stunning, compulsively readable 4.5-star hit.
